Off to Wales!

Tomorrow morning, my wife and I are leaving for a  2 week holiday in Wales.  We are going to visit my family, most of whom relocated to the Isle of Anglesey from Bedfordshire, England almost 10 years ago.  Anglesey is located in northwest Wales – perhaps not the winter beach vacation of my dreams, but it will be great to see my family again.

We have also booked a canal boat for 3 nights along the Llangollen Canal, located in Shropshire, in west England, on the border with Wales.  We can’t wait!  We have vacationed on the canal before, and it really is the best way to relax and unwind.

On our 3 day journey, we’ll travel only 15 miles…(life is much slower on the canal).  And if the weather is so bad that its getting past our raingear Included with the boat rental!), we can always moor the boat, and spend the afternoon and evening in a pub alongside the canal.  Oh, how I miss English pubs…(but that’s another post…)

Llangollen canal

Llangollen canal is considered by many to be the most beautiful in Britain (or so the guide books say!)  We will be traveling over two Victoria era marvels: the Chirk and Pontcysyllte Aqueducts.  Although both are engineering masterpieces, Pontcysyllte is said to be absolutely breathtaking, as it carries the canal in an iron trough 1,000 feet across the River Dee and into Wales at a height of 120 feet.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

It is my goal to post a couple of blogs with photos during our trip, but even the best laid plans go awry…we’ll have to wait and see if there’s an internet café along the canal!

Until then, I bid you hwyl fawr!

(It means “Cheerio” in Welsh, of course ;) )

Howard,

I saw you post on point2homes. Have a great time in Wales. My mother was born in Bangor (although she grew up in Hampshire) and I have been back several times to N. Wales.

That barge trip sounds wonderful. Have you been to the Castles in Carnarvon and Conwy? They are amazing.

I always wonder why british-stle country pubs don't exist here?

Happy Travels!

I met you briefly last summer when down at Hope Bay..but we already had a real estate agent at that time! We are looking to buy on Pender fairly soon and then relocate from Prince George. I spent all my growing up Easter and summer holidays in Trearrdur Bay in Anglesey. Many great memories! have an excellent time, maybe we will meet when we move to pender[which we are so thrilled about]
