Pender Islands Parks Commission Announces New Park on North Pender
The Pender Islands Parks Commission announced this month the creation of Ursula Poepel Park in Magic Lake Estates on North Pender Island, BC. The park has been made possible by Ursula's generous donation of an undeveloped .8 acre lot on Schooner Way. The new park provides an environmental corridor between Schooner Way and Chart Drive, and has been gifted to the CRD for protection in perpetuity as an environmentally sensitive site.
The site is an older second growth forest, with some first growth trees, and contains Douglas Fir, Arbutus and Cedar Trees. A very large veteran Douglas Fir on the property provides a recognized alternate nesxting site for eagles.
Ursula, along with 11 other individuals from the Gulf Islands, was recently nominated for Islands Trust Community Stewardship Award in recognition of this generous donation, as well as her continued work in removing non-native invasive plants.
On behalf of all Pender residents, I send out a big thank you to Ursula and the Pender Islands Parks Commission.
